The Buildings of Burnaby

Happy Canada Day everyone!  Canada Day is essentially the country's Independence Day and there were certainly many celebrations happening today.

Today was mostly spent at Burnaby Village Museum. This quaint, historical town featured several refurbished or replica buildings to show visitors what life was like in the 1920s. There was everything from a general store and schoolhouse to a Chinese herbalist shop and an aptly named McKay's Barbershop. It was delightful to walk in all these various shops and learn a little of the history and culture of the village. Mom really enjoyed the schoolhouse and even spoke to one of the volunteers about how multiplication tables were taught with a clock. We walked over a bridge to a smaller area of the village and saw the end of a Chinese drumming performance from the Tian-Jin Temple.

After exploring the village for a while, I went back to the entrance where a food truck was selling various mac & cheeses. I ordered their Main Event which was the classic mac n cheese. It was pretty good, but I've had better. In remembrance of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923, a wall constructed of bricks of ice was on display at Burnaby Village. The mayor was present at the ceremony and gave a speech acknowledging the mistakes of the past, learning from them, and working together to create a more inclusive community. After finding my brother Joe, we said good bye to Burnaby Village Museum.

Our next stop was to get authentic Canadian poutine from La Belle Patate. On the drive over though, I saw another filming location from The Flash. The BC Stadium is used as STAR Labs particle accelerator in the TV show (with a little CGI added to change the top of the stadium). I wasn't able to take a clear photo of it from the car, but I'll put a picture of the two below for comparison. La Belle Patate was a small hole in the wall place with about twenty different types of poutine available. I ordered the BBQ chicken poutine. I wasn't that impressed by it, but I'm also not a big fan of gravy.

After some quick grocery shopping we headed back to our AirBnB to relax. Tomorrow, we leave at 7:00 am to visit Vancouver Island for the day. Guess I should get a good night's sleep.

If you'd like to read the day's events from my mom's perspective, you can read her blog here.
